Jamie's Italian, Wheeler Street, Cambridge

March 30 2010
(updated review...see verdict)

I have finally made it to Jamie's Italian, in its opening week.

I have never, repeat never queued (in the rain) to eat in a restaurant in Cambridge before. About 15 people were patiently waiting at midday to sample some 'pucker' Italian.

A rather grand front entrance opposite the Corn Exchange reveals a desk from where you are seated. Straight ahead is the main dining area, an enormous parquet floored room lined with cushioned banquettes, filled with tables and accompanied on one side with a kitchen servery. The roof is very high with a domed center all supported on marble pillars. Extremely grand in a casual, friendly way. To the left is a bar area with more covers and upstairs is yet more seating, ideal for private dining or parties.

We were placed in the main dining 'hall'.

Soon after we arrived the place filled up and there was a buzz, a noisy babble much like Browns , except the inherent acoustics made it softer. This gives the place immediate character, and a sense of being alive, amazingly before it has had time to find its feet in Cambridge.

So far so good.

The staff are immaculate in manner, dress and attentiveness. The menu looked really interesting. I found it very hard choosing. While I was waiting for my food I noticed a selection of hams hanging down along the side of the servery. There were surely almost too many, too well placed to be real. I asked the waitress, and yes they are not just there for eye candy (the hams that is). They are real enough, plucked out and used by the chefs. Nice touch.

We ordered a selection of small bites which were not only interesting in conception but delicious. We both had a pasta dish, I chose the carbonara (which would do well to beat the ones I have eaten in Rome in the past). The pasta itself was very good, but it was perhaps lacking in pancetta (considering the gratuitous display of meat on the servery I felt short changed) and the top heavy greenery was abrasive, slightly lodging in my throat.

I had the tiramisu for pudding which was good, but on reflection a bad choice following a rich carbonara. My espresso was eccellente. Illy perfection in a cup.

Verdict

A stunner of a building, decorated superbly (even the gents loo). This place is going to be a winner in Cambridge. The food has clever interesting combinations at a good price. I am looking forward to going back and working my way through the menu.

Update... The comment (see comments section) and recent friends visits have highlighted the unacceptable wait at certain times. I have luckily not experienced this yet, but I suspect it is 'new restaurant teething problems'. Sort it out Jamie!....or you may slip into my 'Could Do Better' section...

I went there on mothers day. Nice decorations but the service left much to be desired. We waited 1 hour for two starters, one of which was simply mushrooms with melted cheese...hardly a time consuming dish. After another half an hour we recieved our mains. The food was nice, as expected, but when you have to order every side seperately, then the cost makes it a must that the food is nice. Unless of course you enjoy your steak as...well, just steak! Take me back to the Copper Kettle any day!

Went to Jamies on the 6th March, around 1740. Five minute wait. Best Tuna I have ever had, starters excellent, We had 3 courses and the bill came to just over £55. Service excellent if not a tad slow but thats what you want in such a good place It is not McDonalds. The only disapointing thing was the pudding I picked Ice Cream a bit wishy washy.

I went to Jamiess on my birthday with my three kids aged 18, 15 and 10. We were told wed have to wait ten minutes before we could sit in the bar and we would be at a table within an hour.My kids were not impressed but it was my birthday and i insisted we waited. I wished id listened to them and gone to pizza express. we waited 25 minutes in the doorway and where then herded through to the bar with alot of other slightly irritated people where my ten year old was served a drink in a chipped glass. When i pointed this out to the barboy he tipped the drink into another glass.we waited another hour before being taken to our table. The food was served on wooden chopping boards which were not easy to manouver food on and deep bowls i would only use for soup. My tiramisu had no liquer that i could taste. All in all the service was chaotic and not good, especially the front of house and bar, the food was not authentic Italian but the building was beautiful!

Goodness. Is this the only thing you can come up with after 17,626 covers in 4 weeks? They must be doing an amazing job.

We arrived at 7pm and were surprised to be escorted upstairs to a room that could only be describe as uninviting, unappealing and even bleak. We were than sat at a table for four even though we were a party of five, this was not a good omen. I could not put my legs under the table, the chairs were very uncomfortable, but I suppose that is a deliberate act so people don’t stay to long . I ask to be moved and we were accommodated downstairs at the smallest table for five I have ever seen or sat at. As it was a special occasion, my daughter’s birthday I decided to bite my tongue and overlook this. We had ordered our starters upstairs and these arrived at a reasonable time about a half an hour, we had ordered three steaks and were very surprised that we had to add chips and side orders to make up the meal as the steak only come as a steak nothing else, except for a bit of watercress, my wife had the chicken salad and one of my daughter’s the carbonara. The steaks had some fat and grizzle on them and came rare rather than medium, mine and one of my daughters were tuff but my youngest said hers was ok, the zucchini was somewhat squelchy and mushy. The desert’s were ok lemon cheese cake very mild hardly any taste of lemon, the tiramisu was very strong with coffee and the bake well was more like apple pie. I know it’s Italian food, but I have eaten far better Italian food in other eateries for half the price. I cannot see myself recommending Jamie’s place to my friend’s, it seems to me that Jamie has sold his name over the door to chefs not as good as him or as passionate as him. Although it was busy this is no excuse for a drop in quality.

Went to Jamies Italian on a Saturday in May for lunch and were lucky enough to just beat the lunchtime rush and get seated immediately. Wonderful building, nicely rennovated (except why choose battleship grey for the walls?) and freindly, but busy, waiter. I know its supposed to be open plan, but it was noisy as hell and any conversation is drowned out by the sound of busy chefs calling service. The kids loved the retro 70sstyle menu gizmos (I had one as a kid!). For starters, my wife had truffle pasta and I had straightforward bruschetta... the kids opted for the usual (lasagne and penne). The starters were both oustanding, and we both liked the bread +oil +rosemary in the minute bread basket. For mains my wife had parma ham + roquette salad and I had Caesar salad with chicken. The Parma was excellent but the roquette salad was salty (similar experience when we went to the Oxford branch of Jamies Italian)and the Caesar was bland the salad sauce tasted and looked just like Helmanns.... The waiter asked us at the end how everything was, so we told him honestly, and at least he fed this back to the chefs (who were so busy, I doubt that anything sank in). This is our second visit to a JI. Id go again, but not for a family occassion. This is more geared towards a friends nightout. For Italian in Cambridge, there are far better options (Margherita, Pizza Express, Carluccios....). Overall, our exprience in both of the JIs weve visited is the same.... very good starters but the mains a bit second rate.

Mixed reviews it seems and I have not been so cannot add anything about the food and to be honest I probably would never go as I would not expect too much from a Jamies Italian however this issue of the steak being served with nothing else is actually authentic Italian eating Italians would begin with a pasta dish and the then follow with a meat or fish dish which may just be the meat or fish as they already would have had pasta or they may add some vegetables salad or potatoes I have not see the menu but this should of course be made clear as it is maybe not common place but it is authentic.

Just come back from my first and last visit to Jamie Olivers restaurant in Cambridge ‘Jamie’s Italian’ Imagine asking for food with no NUTS, because you may die and they get that wrong ! ! ! ! Read on. We had to wait 30 minutes for a seat. Not bad considering the prestigious name attached to the venue. When we arrived at the table, the family of four next two us were already seated at 715pm. We placed our order at 735pm. We had the misfortune of having a none English speaking person as our waiter. Consequently the waiter we had could not understand part of the order of one diet coke or the burger well done. We had to wait 20 minutes until both of us were drinking. The wine for the passenger arrived immediately, but the soft drink for the chauffeur was a struggle. After two reminders he finally managed to get it right. The well done burger arrived, and drew the attention of the neighboring diners. It looked impressive, but was not cooked to order. Once cut open it oozed blood. The burger that was returned was far less impressive. Less salad and chillies, (the joy of complaining) but at least the meat was cooked as requested. The chips that were requested did not materialize. A different portion was presented. Begrudgingly we left a tip of 15p, but only because I did not have the correct change!! At 820pm the family of four next to us got their main course....they had more time obviously than us. Therefor dine here once to say, ‘Ooh I ate at Jamie Olivers place’ (but should have gone to McDonalds.) This restaurant is for People who have all the time in the world to eat People who accept that the customer is wrong, because the chef is always right People who dont mind if the waiter gets the order wrong.......on more than one occasion People that like nostalgia........school dining hall noise and chaos, but with much slower service. Do Not Dine Here If you are not one of the above ! ! ! ! ! ! Try the nearby Cambridge Chop House, fantastic on all counts and well worthy of a 15 tip, or Loch Fyne or even the brasserie at John Lewis, all Knock spots of Jamies Italian.

I have just been reading through the comments on Jamies Italian. Today seven of us had booked a table for Natashas birthday. I was very much thinking that this was going to be a rip off . I was pleasantly surprised. It was around 5pm on Friday and the place was certainly not buzzing with people. We were shown to the bar where we had drinks served quickly ( we were the only people there ). We were then shown upstairs to a private room where a very friendly waitress took our order. Service was quite quick and staff were very obliging. The food was delightfull and cooked and served perfectly. For the price charged, so it should be. I feel that for the price one should not have to pay extra for a megre portion of chips. The building is superb as others have mentioned and must have cost a great deal to be opened as Jamies. So, Everything for us was pretty damn good but very pricy.

Well, we have just visited Jamies Italian restaurant in Cambridge for my hubbys birthday as I wanted to take him somewhere special and wow! Not sure what others were/are expecting when they go to a restaurant such as this, we were expecting good food most importantly, good service and pleasant surroundings. We were not dissapointed. The place was packed around 2pm on a Monday, after a short wait, around 20 minutes in the bar (to be expected when the place is buzzing with folk!) we were showed to our table. The food was served quickly and was hot and tasted devine! Desserts to die for too! The staff were pleasant and friendly. It wasnt really expensive as I had expected, reasonable for the sort of restaurant you are going to id say, you want to pay McDonalds prices go to McDonalds! I think the staff here are doing a swell job for you Mr Oliver and we for sure will be revisiting sometime again in the future, keep up with the good food and good service.
