An insiders' small essential list of food and drink venues in Cambridge 2010

The Free Press, Prospect Row, Cambridge

January 12, 2010
I used to live round the corner from this wonderful little pub, so it was a regular haunt of mine.

The Free Press has been a pub for around 120 years, and walking in is like stepping back in time.

The small bar is exactly what a bar should be, somewhere to prop up. The stools are often adorned with locals drinking the excellent choice of well kept beer. The place is scattered with old tables and chairs of all shapes and sizes, giving the place bags of character.

If you want a bit of privacy there is even a small snug, with its own dedicated bar area.

The garden adds another nice dimension, and you can also sit out front and watch the world go by. Food is simple hearty home-made stuff. A great foil to a pint of real ale.

There is no music and mobile phones are not allowed. Just conversation. Perfect.

Interestingly before the smoking ban this pub was in fact non smoking, an old fashioned pub ahead of its time.
