Hotel Du Vin, Trumpington Street Cambridge

January 06, 2010
Hotel Du Vin is lets face it a nice boutique hotel chain, and it is a thoroughly good thing that we now have one in Cambridge. Adding a bit of chic to the plethora of dull corporate conference hotels around the place.

The vaulted cellar cocktail bar looks impressive, and is indeed very nice for an early evening aperitif. The problem is that is can be easily overwhelmed which results in some longish waits for service.

The bistro is a lovely environment offering I quote -

'European cuisine with a modern edge'

I have eaten there several times for lunch and dinner. The service is very good, and the food can be exquisite....but there is no consistency. I have had some meals there (which are certainly not cheap) that could be surpassed in its more reasonably priced neighbour Browns Restaurant a few doors up the road.

It really stings when an expensive meal does not deliver. My experience is very hit and miss.

Verdict

The bar is a fun start to an evening out in Cambridge. If you want to eat there I hope your experience of the bistro will be more consistent than mine. Be prepared to shed many more pounds than you will gain.
